Message from the Division Head

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the UBC Division of Vascular Surgery website!

The Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of British Columbia is the largest in Western Canada, providing tertiary and quaternary level care for vascular surgery patients from across British Columbia and the Yukon.  It is also the largest Royal College training program for vascular surgeons in Western Canada and it’s graduates provide care to most of British Columbia and Western Canada.

The Division was formed as a separate Division within the University of British Columbia Department of Surgery in 1980 with Dr. Wally Chung named the first Division Head.  Our division’s clinical activities are based at three main academic hospitals in Vancouver: Vancouver General, St Paul’s, Royal Columbian, as well as the Royal Jubilee in Victoria, and the Kelowna General Hospital. This provides an unparalleled exposure to a tremendous breadth and volume of vascular pathology and advanced surgical techniques for our trainees and faculty.

The Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of British Columbia has a long and distinguished track record of clinical excellence, and leadership in education, and academia. Several division members have served as President of  the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery and hold leadership positions with the Vascular Surgery Specialty Committee of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

Our Vascular Surgery residency program is extremely well supported and attracts exceptional candidates from across the country who will become the future leaders of our specialty. We take tremendous pride in our residency training program and all of our trainees and graduates and strive to foster a learning environment of diversity, inclusivity and camaraderie.

The Division of Vascular Surgery embraces the UBC Department of Surgery’ s mission to serve the surgical care needs of our local and global communities, and to improve health outcomes through basic and clinical research, education of medical professionals, and innovation in clinical techniques, technology, and health systems.

Sincerely,

D. Kirk Lawlor, BSc MD MEd FRCSC FACS
