Message from the Program Director

I would like to welcome prospective and current medical students and residents to the University of British Columbia Division of Vascular Surgery website.

The University of British Columbia Division of Vascular Surgery Residency Program is a fully accredited 5-year direct entry Royal College primary specialty training program with the objective of training outstanding vascular surgeons to serve the population of British Columbia and Canada. The program aims to develop excellent clinical and academic surgeons capable of the diagnosis and management of all forms of vascular pathology and support excellence in technical performance, scholarly inquiry, and compassionate patient care. The program trains 1 resident/year through CaRMS and does not have a fellowship pathway.

The UBC Vascular Surgery Residency Program has 5 core training sites, each of which is involved in resident selection, training, evaluation and program development: Vancouver General Hospital (Vancouver), St. Paul’s Hospital (Vancouver), Kelowna General Hospital, Royal Jubilee Hospital (Victoria), and Royal Columbian Hospital (New Westminster). With an extensive exposure to vascular surgery across the province, graduates are exposed to all aspects of open and endovascular surgery in both academic and community hospital contexts. Each of these sites and their respective faculty provide an invaluable contribution to the development and training of our graduates and in meeting the individual career goals of our trainees.

The UBC Vascular Residency Program is closely associated with the UBC Faculty of Medicine and prides itself in fostering interest and providing outstanding educational experiences to undergraduate medical students from across Canada. Mentorship, research opportunities and clinical exposure are foundational components of the training experience for undergraduate students for our division, and clinical electives at any of the training sites are welcomed for those interested in pursuing their interest in the specialty further.

Thank you for your interest in our program!
